Widening Roadway & Bridges on State Highway 130
OHLA USA performed two contracts totaling $92.9 million to widen and improve 22 miles of State Highway 130 and its associated 14 bridges for our client, the Texas Department of Transportation. The project featured the construction of an additional main lane in each direction, auxiliary lanes between ramps, widening shoulders, bridges, and culverts, installation of infrastructure for an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), and other improvements to enhance safety and driver reliability. The project stretched from the eastern side of Austin from State Highway 45 as the project’s northern limit, to US 71 as the southern limit, with US 290 dividing the two contracts.
Since more than 150,000 cubic yards of concrete were required, OHLA USA procured a mobile concrete plant and assembled it on site. The ability to manufacture the concrete in close proximity to where it was needed saved time and money. In addition to concrete pavement, the construction team was also responsible for earthwork, grading, utilities, and bridge construction including installation of cast-in-place and precast substructure, pre-cast bridge beams, pre-cast bridge deck panels, and cast-in-place bridge deck work at 14 different bridges.
