Aurora Transportation Center Enhancements & Pedestrian Bridge
Our subsidiary, Judlau Contracting, executed this critical $15 million contract to address the Illinois Department of Transportation’s need to provide greater multi-modal passenger access to the Aurora Transportation Center and improve pedestrian and traffic flow, all while enhancing safety.
A significant portion of the project called for improvements in the parking lot/bus area to resolve the conflict of passenger vehicles, buses, and pedestrians converging within the same place. Judlau performed the required construction activities to relocate the Pace bus staging area to the east side of the commuter parking lot. The conflict was reduced significantly by moving the buses closer to the platform and providing designated drop-off areas, increasing bus efficiency and a safer travel environment.
In addition to the work required to upgrade the parking lot, the project team constructed a 750-foot-long pedestrian bridge over the Fox River to provide direct access to the center and connectivity to the surrounding neighborhoods and regional bike trails. The pedestrian bridge serves as a catalyst for promoting the use of the center and provides direct access to existing under-utilized parking lots.
Other project features included constructing a new parking lot on the west side of the Fox River to provide additional parking spaces and installing a new traffic signal and associated intersection improvements on Broadway Avenue.
The contract was selected as a Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association.
