I-75 Express Lanes, Segments A & B
The goal of this $233 million design-build project was to ease congestion, accommodate future regional growth and development, enhance hurricane and other emergency evacuations, and improve system connectivity between key transportation facilities in Southeast Florida.
OHLA USA, through its subsidiary, Community Asphalt, designed and constructed a 3.1-mile, four-lane tolled roadway within the 166-foot-wide median of I-75, featuring two lanes on each side of the barrier wall. The contract also involved the construction of four flyovers, five bridges, and two bridge and ramp widenings at the intersection of I-75 and Florida’s Turnpike to accommodate express lane connections and implement new traffic patterns.
In addition, the project team reconstructed the Miami Gardens Drive Interchange, replaced the Bass Creek Road bridge deck, and built sound barrier walls along with eight neighborhoods that are adjacent to the highway. The scope of work included the construction of mechanically stabilized earth walls, drainage systems, and the installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure, lighting, and signal systems. The project team achieved a major project milestone by opening the I-75 express lanes ahead of schedule.
The project was awarded Outstanding Design-Build Project by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida (ACEC-FL). It was also selected as an ENR Best Project in the Highway/Bridge category.
