Power Communications and Signaling Improvements, Phases I & II
This critical $225 million contract was awarded to OHLA USA’s subsidiary, Judlau Contracting, Inc., as a joint venture in response to Superstorm Sandy’s impact on rail infrastructure throughout the Metro-North Railroad’s right-of-way. In particular, the project addressed the third rail traction power in New York State and the communications and signal (C&S) components and systems.
The work included upgrading the power and C&S systems and raising all vital equipment onto elevated structural platforms, set four feet above FEMA Base Flood Elevations at 92 locations.
Phases I and II of the project involved designing and constructing 92 elevated steel equipment platforms, furnishing and installing new concrete-encased ducts and polymer concrete cable troughs, perimeter protection, and hardening of substations and train yard buildings.
These repairs are along 30 miles of the Hudson line. Railroad operations remained operational for approximately 45,000 daily riders. This restoration project aims to bring the system to a state of good repair and provide preventative measures in safeguarding against future stormwater damage.
